Stimulus Payment
Like millions of other people in America, you filed an extension
before last April 15th so that you could have until October 15th
to file your taxes. Well, that day has passed, you’ve filed your
tax return, and now you wonder where your stimulus payment is, because
everyone else has already received theirs.
Good news- your stimulus payment is probably on its way. From the
time that you mail or e-file your return, it can take up to a week
for the Internal Revenue Service to process your return and determine
your eligibility for a stimulus payment. From there, it can take
anywhere from six to eight weeks to receive your check. In most
cases, if you e-file your return, your refund or stimulus payment
will arrive a lot faster.
As we all know, the IRS has a reputation for not being very taxpayer-friendly.
In most instances, the complaints are justified, but in this instance,
they’re not. Simply inputting some basic information will allow
you to determine the status of your stimulus payment. To do this,
visit the IRS website (which can be found at IRS.gov). On that page,
there is a link marked “Economic Stimulus Payment Information Center”.
Click on it, and on the next page, click on the link that is marked
“Where’s My Stimulus?”.
Here’s where you will need to input your information, such as your
Social Security number, filing status, and number of exemptions.
If you need to, you can refer to your tax return documents. The
IRS will provide you with a statement that tells you how much you
claimed, and how much you will actually get. There’s usually a difference
between the two amounts, because of taxes owed or from late payment
and filing penalties.
It’s essential that you keep your address up to date with the IRS.
Of course, Uncle Sam wants to know where you live, and the IRS needs
to know where to send the check because they don’t forward the stimulus
payment checks. The stimulus payment was meant to breathe life back
into the economy, and it was also meant to encourage people to start
spending money again. Time will tell if the stimulus program is
truly effective.
