One Tree Hill
One Tree Hill is a teen/young adult soap opera, created
by Mark Schwahn. It premiered in September 2003 on the WB
network, which merged with UPN to form the CW network. To
this day, the CW is the official broadcaster for the show.
On February 25, 2009 the show was renewed for its seventh
season. One Tree Hill is set in the fictional North Carolina
town of Tree Hill. It follows the lives of half-brothers Lucas
and Nathan Scott (played by Chad Michael Murray and James
Lafferty). They started out as bitter enemies, but in time
they developed a close and brotherly relationship. Basketball
and fleeting romances are important to the show’s plotline.
The show’s first four seasons concentrate on Lucas and Nathan’s
high school careers. In the beginning of the fifth season,
producers skipped ahead by four years, showing the characters’
post-college lives. The seventh season saw another timeline
adjustment, skipping a year ahead of the events of the sixth
season. The original opening credits had Gavin DeGraw’s “I
Don’t Want to Be" as a theme song, but the song was removed
in the fifth season. Interior shots are filmed in Wilmington,
North Carolina, and exterior shots are filmed in the surrounding
area.
One Tree Hill has had average ratings, but the second season
has been the highest-rated with a little over four million
weekly viewers. The show has won multiple Teen Choice Awards,
and as of right now, the first six seasons are available on
DVD. In May of 2009, it was announced that Chad Michael Murray
and Hilarie Burton weren’t coming back for the seventh season.
In February of this year, it was also announced that the show’s
renewal for an eighth season is in doubt due to contract issues.
The show’s producer, Mark Schwahn, wanted to make One Tree
Hill into a film called Ravens, which is the name of the high
school’s basketball team. However, he decided that it would
make a better television series. Fans wonder what the show
is named after, and that question is seemingly answered in
the first season when Lucas is told “There’s only one Tree
Hill, and it’s your home". As with a lot of other shows,
music plays an important role- with scenes tied together by
songs that are usually played all the way through. A lot of
the show’s episodes are also named after songs.
