Lost
Fans of the ABC show “Lost" are well acquainted with
John Locke. We were first introduced in the first episode
of the show, and the man everyone knows just as “Locke"
has been a big part of the show since Oceanic Flight 815 slammed
into the Pacific. Locke is known for a lot of things, most
notably that before the plane crash, he was confined to a
wheelchair. Inexplicably, he is completely healed after the
accident.
On “Lost”, Locke is a character that’s known for a lot more
than just his physical strength. Although he has a deep and
abiding faith, he isn’t overly religious. Rather, he has faith
in the island that shelters them, and that everyone has a
destiny and everything happens for a reason. Perhaps most
troubling, he’s even willing to lay down his life for a cause
that he doesn’t fully understand.
As some of you may know, Locke shares a name and some characteristics
with the 17th century thinker that shares his name. The other
John Locke was born in 1632, and his philosophies on nature
and civilization continue to have a major impact on society
even today. The idea that man can control nature is a recurring
theme on “Lost”, and this philosophy figures prominently in
the way Locke makes decisions.
“Lost” is a television show with plenty of twists, turns,
and surprises, and Locke and the other characters always come
up with something to surprise us. The show has been on since
2004, and this is supposed to be the last season, but let’s
hope that ABC and the powers that be keep it going for a few
more seasons.
