"But you know, is not the gospel sound, the sound
- it is the message. If it is about Jesus Christ, it is gospel"
- Edwin Hawkins
In a printed work was the term "gospel song" probably
first used in 1874 by Philip P. Bliss, and indeed for a collection
of his compositions for the community singing at religious
gatherings, "Gospel Songs, Hymns And A Choice Collection
Of Tunes". The term "Gospel Song" was and is
used in several contexts. First, he stood next to words such
as "Hymns", "Psalms," "Chant",
"hymn" for songs that were sung in the churches
of the white population in America.
Strongly influenced the concept in its present form, however,
the early 30s of the 20th Century as a description of the
religious songs of the Afro-American churches in North America.
These songs were a continuation of the "Negro Spirituals"
with a strong involvement of jazz and blues elements. This
kind of gospel music, including "black gospel" or
"negro gospel" means, was often the congregational
singing or solo was performed, sung by choirs or small groups
of singers and often accompanied by a jazz band with drums,
bass, piano and organ.

borrow elements from the gospel music or even modern interpretations
of long-known gospel songs such as the Caravan of Love Housemartins.
