Gilmore Girls
Gilmore Girls is a comedy/drama series produced by Amy Sherman-Palladino,
and it stars Alexis Bledel and Lauren Graham. It enjoyed a
seven-year run, starting on October 5, 2000 and ending on
May 15, 2007. The show is on Time Magazine’s list of the top
one hundred television shows of all time, and it also showed
up at #32 on Entertainment Weekly’s “New TV Classics"
list. Gilmore Girls is focused on single mom Lorelei Gilmore
(played by Graham) and her daughter Rory (Bledel). They live
in the fictional Connecticut town of Stars Hollow, along with
a lot of other quirky people. The show deals with issues of
friendship, loyalty, and the generation gap Lorelei’s strained
relationship with her upper-class parents is the show’s social
commentary on the divide between rich and poor.
Gilmore Girls’ pilot episode was financially backed by the
Family Friendly Programming Forum, with help from some of
the nation’s biggest advertisers. The show didn’t have high
ratings at first, because it aired on Thursday night at 8pm
against Survivor and Friends. However, when it was moved to
Tuesday nights opposite Buffy the Vampire Slayer, it became
more popular. In its fifth season, Gilmore Girls became its
network’s second most popular show. It continues to run in
syndication to this day, on the ABC Family Channel and Soapnet.
The WB network had plans for a spin-off with Jess as the focus
(called Windward Circle), but canceled the production due
to the high cost of filming on location. However, creator
Amy Sherman-Palladino has taken fan reaction to the series’
ending into consideration, and said that she would be interested
in making a Gilmore Girls movie.
Most fans of the show know that music plays an important
part in the plot. Most of the show’s recurring characters
have revealed their musical tastes at some time- Lorelei professed
a love for 80s music like the Go-Gos, David Bowie, the Bangles,
and Duran Duran. Rory shares her mom’s love for music, and
they even swap CDs back and forth. A lot of musical talent
made guest appearances on the show, such as Carole King. There
was a soundtrack released in 2002, with liner notes from Sherman-Palladino
talking about the huge musical influence on the show.
