Britney Spears
Britney Spears was born December 2, 1981. Born in Mississippi
and raised in Louisiana, she got her first shot at fame as
a 1992 contestant on Star Search. Britney went on to star
on the Disney Channel's Mickey Mouse Club from 1993 to 1994.
She began her career as a recording artist in 1997, when she
signed a contract with Jive Records. She released her first
album, ...Baby, One More Time, in 1999. It debuted at #1 on
the Billbord Top 200 and to date has sold over 25 million
copies around the world. She had continued success with her
second album, aptly titled Oops!...I Did it Again in 2000.
Those two items cemented her status as a pop star, and she
is part of the reason why teen pop was so popular in the last
part of the 1990s.
In 2001, she had another album, Britney, and she also had
her first film role (the starring role in Crossroads). On
her fourth album, In the Zone (released in 2003), she had
creative control- and the success of that album mad her the
only female artist of the modern era to have her first four
albums debut at #1. Her fifth album, Blackout, was released
in 2007, and her sixth album, Circus (2008) also debuted at
#1. In late 2009, she released The Singles Collection, which
contained her third #1 hit single, aptly titled 3.
Up to today, Britney Spears has sold over 83 million albums
around the world. She was named the second-best selling act
of the 2000s by Billboard Magazine, based on her album sales.
She is the 8th best selling female singer in the US, with
over 32 million albums sold, according to the RIAA. With earnings
of over thirty-five million dollars in 2009, she is Forbes'
13th most powerful celebrity.
Britney Spears has seen her share of controversy, with her
quickie marriage to a childhood friend, and her subsequent
marriage and co-parenthood with Kevin Federline. She has had
struggles with drugs, and several infamous incidents (such
as shaving her head and attacking a paparazzi with an umbrella).
However, she seems to have moved past most of that, and is
back, better than ever.
