Supernatural
Supernatural is a drama/horror series that stars Jared Padalecki
as Sam Winchester and Jensen Ackles as his brother Dean. Together,
they hunt demons and other ghostly figures. The series is
mostly filmed in Vancouver, and it debuted on September 13,
2005 on the WB network (it became a CW show when the WB and
UPN merged). It was created by Eric Kripke, and it’s produced
by Warner Bros. The show’s fifth season ended on Sept. 10,
2009, and it has been renewed for another season as of February
16.
Before bringing the show to TV, Kripke had it in development
for almost ten years. The show’s premise stems from his childhood
fascination with urban legends. Kripke originally wanted the
show to be a movie, but he spent years pitching it unsuccessfully.
His original idea of having the main characters be tabloid
reporters wasn’t received well, so at the last minute, he
decided to make them road-tripping, evil-fighting brothers.
When it was time to name the two protagonists, Kripke decided
on “Sal" and “Dean". However, he felt that “Sal"
was too informal, so he changed it to “Sam". Originally,
the brothers’ last name was to be Harrison, in a nod to the
cocky swagger of Harrison Ford. This idea was nixed because
there was a Sam Harrison living in Kansas. The last name,
Winchester, came from Kripke’s fascination with the Winchester
Mystery House and his desire to make it like a modern-day
Western.
Most of the music used for the show is original, but some
is classic rock from Kripke’s personal collection. Bands like
AC/DC and Blue Oyster Cult have played roles on more than
one occasion. Most episodes use more than one song, and music
is always played over “The Road So Far" shots that air
before some episodes. Four seasons of the show are available
on DVD, which will allow you to catch up on what you missed.
