Bones
Bones is a crime drama that premiered on Fox in September
2005. The show is based heavily on forensic science, much
like other popular crime dramas. Each episode focuses on an
FBI file and a set of human remains brought to the forensic
anthropology team, which is headed by Dr. Temperance Brennan.
Emily Deschanel plays that part, and her foil, Agent Seeley
Booth, is played quite capably by David Boreanaz. Supporting
cast includes T.J. Thyne, Tamara Taylor, and John Francis
Daley. The show was created by Hart Hanson, and it is loosely
based upon the life and career of forensic anthropologist
Kathy Reichs (who happens to be one of the show’s producers).
Reichs is also a crime-novel writer, and Temperance Brennan
is named after the protagonist in one of her book series.
Bones begins in the year 2005, and it tells the story of
case files solved by Bones and Agent Booth. By examining the
human remains they’re given, Brennan and Booth are able to
solve cases by looking at them through a fresh set of eyes.
In addition to a murder case in every episode, the show also
deals with the personal lives of the characters (and pays
special attention to the budding romance between Bones and
Booth). The show, while serious at most times, has darkly
comedic undertones.
The show is almost as popular online as it is on television.
Fox released free episodes of Bones, along with several other
series, to be available to watch on Hulu and MySpace (the
latter, coincidentally enough, is owned by Fox). Bones is
also available via Fox on Demand, and Canadians can watch
newer episodes on the Global TV website.
The show enjoys critical acclaim, with USA Today saying that
it’s built on the strength of its characters. However, some
media outlets say that Bones leaves a lot to be desired. Media
Life Magazine says that the show’s execution doesn’t match
up with the expectation. Despite the few negative reviews
from critics, Bones continues to be popular with viewers and
it’s currently in its fifth season.
